Runaway Bride
So all day today the news has been consumed with Jennifer Willbanks. I could talk for hours on the subject, but I'll just say that on the one hand I can't help but feel sorry for her, but on the other, damn what a stupid thing to do. Now I don't know the girl, but I know that I'd be freaked out too if I were about to have a wedding that huge. 600 people, 14 bridesmaids? How does one even come to know 14 people to ask to be bridesmaids? If I were about to walk down the aisle in front of 600 people I'd be freaked. But I wouldn't run across the country and have my picture on everyone's tv screen all over the nation. Talk about embarrassing.
When I got married it was a rather simple ceremony, nice but nothing extravagant. I think we may have sent out about 200 invitations. We planned it for about a year and at times it was really stressful. Someone interviewed on the news said that 95% of the pressure and responsibility falls on the bride (when planning a wedding), and I'd say that's about right. When I was planning my wedding I worked retail part-time, and had a relatively simple, care-free life. I'm 32 now, same age as Jennifer Willbanks, and if I were planning some huge wedding now then I'd probably go pretty stir-crazy.
Anyway, I guess it's not right to pass judgement; it's up to her fiance' to do that. And as he says, everyone makes mistakes. But if I was him I'd think long and hard about whether I want to spend my life with someone who deals with the stress of planning a wedding by running away, three days before the wedding at that.

A Rouse-ing
My, what a dusty, unused blog I've managed to create. Attempting to change that, but no promises.
Anyway, last night was the much-anticipated Josh Rouse show at Smith's. It was most excellent, even more so than I expected. Trent Dabbs opened at about 9:15-ish (way too long a wait for an 8 p.m. show). He had a very Jeff Buckley-influenced, soft-rock thing going on, with a very entertaining band... drummer was particularly tight yet loose at the same time, very fun to watch.
Josh came on looking very dapper, as did the rest of his band, which was a little older than I expected. AMAZING musicians, the backing vocals were dead-on and one of the highlights of the show. Josh's voice was also in great form and clear as a bell. Very good sound for the whole show. He started off with "It's the Nighttime" which, if I remember correctly, led in to several more songs off "Nashville" (which, by the way, you should get if you don't have it - probably his best album yet). Most of the show was split between tunes from Nashville and "1972," with a few old ones thrown in; I was particularly stoked to hear "Directions," the song that first turned me on to Josh.
I took some pictures but still can't seem to figure out the best way to handle low-lighting with my camera. At any rate, here are a few...
